A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 shook Turkey and was felt in multiple provinces in the region, resulting in several buildings collapsing, according to reports.

The quake was centered around 33 km (20 miles) from Gaziantep and 26 km (16 miles) from the town of Nurdagi, and was recorded as being 18 km (11 miles) deep by the US Geological Survey. Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management agency is located in Pazarcik, Kahramanmaras province.

The European Union is dispatching rescue teams and preparing additional assistance for Turkey, with teams from the Netherlands and Romania already en route, coordinated by the EU's Emergency Response Coordination Centre, according to Commissioner Janez Lenarcic.
