More than 4,000 dead in Turkey and northwest Syria after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, according to the Associated Press. The quake caused entire buildings to collapse, damaged hospitals, and left thousands injured or homeless.
Rescue efforts were hindered by the cold winter weather and dropping temperatures close to freezing, making it difficult for survivors trapped under debris or those who have lost their homes, according to Reuters.
The earthquake, which was followed by 145 aftershocks, was the largest recorded globally by the US Geological Survey since August 2021, when a tremor occurred in the South Atlantic.
